Tracey (me!) receiving the £300 voucher to spend on materials for the Chorlton Mosaic Group

For the second year running, my mosaic evening class in Chorlton, Manchester has produced the North West regional finalist for the Topps Tiles Award for Achievement in Mosaic. Our winner this year is Sheenaanne with her ambitious outdoor mosaic dining table, entitled “Fortunate Dining”.

Fortunate, indeed. Sheenaanne receives a certificate of achievement and a prize of £100 voucher to spend on mosaic supplies at Topps Tiles. As her teacher, I receive a voucher for £300 to spend on materials for the class, which will boost our resources again!!

Judge David Tuhill (RCA), selected this entry reporting “The blue water shimmers, the border with the many luminous circles echoes the white fishes which are so very artistically rendered…..a tremendously skilful piece of work merits you the first prize Sheenaanne”

Other entries in the class portfolio included Sheenaanne’s “Peaceful Chui”, Christine Hyde’s abstract “Glacial Fragmentation”, Susie Wakefield’s colourful “Tutti Frutti”, Sue Glenn’s “Summer” and Mary Pye’s delightful “Apricot Tree”.

“Apricot Tree” was inspired by a nursery song. Mary has created a lovely stylised Apricot Tree in this mosaic table stand.

All of these received excellent comments from David and demonstrate the imagination and variety of work that is made in our weekly Thursday evening class – a great place to enjoy the company of fellow mosaic enthusiasts and find creative inspiration.

Tutti Frutti was Susie’s first piece of mosaic work. I love the harmony of blues and the rectilinear composition, interrupted with the contrasting red tesserae.

If you have been inspired by Sheenaanne’s lovely work and fancy making a mosaic table, you can buy a kit here or contact me to enquire about the next Mosaic Tables workshop. For details of the class in Chorlton, click here.

Thank you Topps Tiles!!!

Christmas Crackers

2012 has been a fabulous year for all things MOSAIC in the North West.

Patricia (Lee) and I have enjoyed taking up the role of Joint Co-ordinators of BAMM North West and despite a difficult start to the year, we are pleased with our overall progress. For anybody in the region – we cover a very large area that includes Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Greater Manchester….pretty much every county south of West Yorkshire and north of (and including, I think!) both the East and West Midlands – please get in touch if you’d like to join!

In July, we ran our exhibition “Nip, Stick & Grout” at the wonderful Victoria Baths in Manchester. The exhibition showed mosaics made by members of BAMM North West (the piece above, ‘Flow’ by Deborah Pitman, was inspired by her visit to the baths) alongside work made by the talented mosaic enthusiasts who attend the Thursday evening “Mosaic Therapy” sessions with me in Chorlton. Here’s some recent work made by the group in the run-up to Christmas:

FEBRUARY – In the New Year, we have an exciting opportunity on offer to attend a special workshop by Roman Mosaic expert, Lawrence Payne. Lawrence has his studio in Bury St. Edmonds but I’ve persuaded him to journey UP NORTH to provide a one-off workshop for us in Manchester. If you’re interested, book soon because we only have a few places left!!

SPRING – In the spring Chorlton Mosaic Group will be submitting their best mosaics for the annual Topps Tiles Achievement in Mosaic Award again. This year we were thrilled that one of our gang – Vicky – won best in region. Thanks to her fabulous ‘Fun Train’ mosaic, conceived (sorry!) for her new baby’s nursery, we were all winners. Vicky accepted a cheque for £100 as her prize and the class received a whopping £300 worth of materials from Topps.

Christmas Good wishes to all of you and wishing you all the best for the New Year!!!
