A Bit More Nip, Stick and Grout……BAMM, BAMM!!!

By popular demand (well at the invitation of Victoria Baths, to be more honest), our exhibition ‘Nip, Stick and Grout’ will now stay up for the rest of the summer, ending 31st August 2012.

Work by the Chorlton Mosaic Group and BAMM North West is on display at Manchester’s Victoria Baths. The show was opened to the public on Sunday July 1st at the Indoor Beach Open Day, when visitors were also invited to take part in a drop-in mosaic workshop, amongst other activities.

The Chorlton Mosaic Group meets every Thursday evening to spend an hour and a half together working on a variety of mosaic projects at Chorlton Central Community Centre at the corner of Sandy Lane and Barlow moor Road in Chorlton-cum-Hardy. Since January 2011, when I started the evening class, the numbers attending and standard of work being produced have steadily increased. This is the first group exhibition and since I have recently become one of the joint co-ordinators of BAMM North West, Patricia and I decided it would be fabulous to invite professional mosaic artists from the region to show their work alongside the Chorlton group’s exhibits.

The British Association of Modern Mosaic (BAMM) was founded in 1999 and exists to promote, encourage and support excellence in contemporary mosaic art and to raise public awareness of modern mosaic art through exhibitions, publications, events and related educational activities. BAMM is an energetic and enthusiastic membership organisation open to all those interested in contemporary mosaic art, whether you are an artist, a collector, student or enthusiast.

BAMM also works with Topps Tiles to assist with two competitions each year – MegaMosaicMakers, which celebrates and encourages mosaic projects in primary schools and the Achievement in Mosaic Award, which rewards achievement by adult students attending mosaic classes and courses throughout the UK. This year, a member of the Chorlton Mosaic Group, Vicky Crosby, is the winner of the award for the North West region and her winning entry ‘Fun Train’ goes through to the national final. (You can see an image of Fun Train in my last post). The judge of the regional portfolios, David Tuhill, who has taught at various art colleges including the Royal College of Art praised the group’s submission, writing ”Each of the pieces submitted for this award show great skill and creativity and it is certainly one of the best packs of work I have seen this year; it was really difficult to choose just one winner.”

We’re all off to Topps Tiles in Sale tomorrow at 11.30am to watch Vicky receive her certificate of achievement and £100 voucher to spend in Topps Tiles to encourage her future mosaic work. For the rest of the class, we will receive £300 to spend on supplies for next term…….ONWARDS AND UPWARDS!!!!

Nip, Stick & Grout is at Victoria Baths, Hathersage Road, Manchester M13 0FE. Opening times are limited, so please check their website for details.
